Today NetApplience folks has told me that Linux performance is twice better than FreeBSD when using em(4) driver, and they pointed out that the driver FreeBSD is using does not do a good job at this time. I have tried to tune some certain part of the kernel however the result is still not so good at the time I am writing.
It seems that FreeBSD and NetBSD have a lot of difference on busdma interfaces and this has blocked me from porting OpenBSD’s firmware upload support on mpt(4). Will have another attempt this weekend.

I was quite busy recently however it is time to release delphijfork as 5-STABLE is imminent.
As always, it can be obtained from ftp://ftp.freebsdchina.org/pub/china_ports/delphijfork.
In this release, I have added a (untested) ATA workaround for CD-ROMs that is not installed in correct slot.
delphijfork 20040809 consists the latest FreeBSD features as well as my local changes in kernel and userland applications.
This release is primarily a “bugfix” release, including a large set of bugfixes in drivers and kernel.
This is basically equivlent as what is running on beastie.frontfree.net. It exhibits stablity and performance improvements the recent work by FreeBSD folks.

Yeah I know that you were surprised why there were not delphijfork during the last two weeks, that is because I was extremely busy and beasite got some problems. Now everything seems to be sane.

Historically, the only translation performed on I/O requests after they they left the file-system layer were logical sub disk implementation done in the device driver. No universal standard for how sub disks are configured and implemented exists, in fact pretty much every single platform and operating system have done it their own way. As FreeBSD migrates to other platforms it needs to understand these local conventions to be able to co-exist with other operating systems on the same disk.
